SPYRUS Rosetta Personal Access Reader 2 provides platform of trust for PKI and standalone operations

San Jose, Calif. - January 3, 2001 - SPYRUS, the High Assurance PKI Systems Company for Global Business, today announced the release of the Rosetta Personal Access ReaderTM (PAR 2), the only compact, portable smart card reader with the ability to be re-programmed. PAR 2 revolutionizes the smart card application development process by offering a secure platform upon which trusted applications can be built.

Rosetta PAR 2 is a portable smart card reader for laptop and desktop computers that provides secure conditional access to PC-based smart card applications. It can be used both in a stand-alone model as well as in a tethered mode for personal computers. The reader's thin form factor design, and its easy-to-use keypad and two-line alphanumeric LCD display, allows for easy access of standalone applications. Typical applications include e-purse management, account balance inquiry, medical and other personal information storage, and loyalty programs.

Rosetta PAR 2 also supports secure PIN entry for PKI-ready applications, such as secure e-mail, browsing, file security, access control, and digital authentication. When secure conditional access to PC-based smart card applications are required, the reader can be dropped into an available desktop docking station and used as an ISO 7816 smart card reader with secure PIN entry.

"Rosetta PAR 2 leverages the extensive smart card experience of SPYRUS to become the next generation of smart card reader. Not only does Rosetta PAR 2 provide a critical component for end-user security solutions for standalone and PKI functions, it offers a secure, reliable development platform for smart card applications," said Sue Pontius, SPYRUS President and CEO. "For the first time, third-party developers can customize an application on a reader without having to develop the whole product in-house, thus saving significant development costs."

Secure Development Platform

The re-programmability aspect unique to Rosetta PAR 2 enables companies to deliver custom applications, tailored to fit the needs of end users. A wide range of industries will find the Rosetta PAR 2's secure pin entry feature set to be a secure, portable platform for application development. These include the healthcare market, where protecting the privacy of patient information is critical, and the financial services industry, where establishing access control is a key requirement.

Rosetta PAR 2 is available separately, or as part of the Rosetta Executive Suite, a complete, personal, and portable smart card system bundle that also includes the Rosetta Smart Card, and software allowing secure email and web browsing capability. Compatible with leading browsers and e-mail packages, Rosetta Executive Suite ensures secure transactions through use of public key technology.

Rosetta PAR 2 also has a unique, patent pending smart card holder which provides the capability for use as an employee ID badging system. When combined with the Rosetta Executive Suite, the system becomes the "One Card" System, providing both physical and logical access control.

Availability and Pricing

Rosetta Personal Access Reader 2 begins shipping in January 2001 and is available directly from SPYRUS and its OEM partners.
