SPYRUS Announces Hydra Privacy Card® Series II Digital Attaché at RSA® Conference 2008

First Hardware-Based Full Disk Encryption for Removable Media with Media Sharing

San Jose, California – April 8, 2008 – SPYRUS, Inc., an innovator in identity management and high-security hardware and software cryptography, today announced Digital Attaché™, the newest member of the Hydra Privacy Card® (Hydra PC™) Series II family of high-assurance, portable data encryption and storage devices. Digital Attaché is unique in providing both individual file and full disk encryption of removable miniSD/SDHC or microSD/SDHC memory cards, and it introduces two additional features to the proven capabilities of the Hydra PC Personal Encryption Device and Enterprise Editions.

Removable memory cards can be configured as multiple drives by hardware compartmentalization: one compartment with hardware-based full disk encryption and one clear (unencrypted) compartment. Any file in the encrypted compartment can be opened, modified, and saved without becoming vulnerable to interception, because the files are protected by full disk encryption.

Digital Attaché users can share access to the removable memory card with a designated list of authenticated Digital Attaché devices. The memory card will not work in an undesignated Digital Attaché, even if the user knows the correct PIN.

Digital Attaché supports the strongest cryptographic algorithms and key lengths commercially available, exceeding the Suite B algorithms approved by the U.S. Government to protect both unclassified and classified information through the TOP SECRET level. Supported algorithms include AES 128/192/256, ECC P-256/384/521, and SHA-224/256/384/512. There is no need to upgrade the operating system or other applications to take advantage of this high-strength cryptographic protection. Digital Attaché also supports 3DES, SHA-1, and RSA legacy algorithms for PKI operations.

Like the Hydra PC Enterprise Edition, Digital Attaché provides individual file encryption and encrypted file sharing. It can serve as a security device to safeguard Windows logon passwords and private keys used with digital certificates. It is compatible with industry-standard smart card logon protocols, S/MIME secure e-mail technology, VPN authentication, and Web-based SSL/TLS with mutual authentication.

“Data leakage resulting from malicious or inadvertent actions is reaching epidemic proportions, as evidenced by the many news stories concerning exposure of corporate and personally identifiable information,” said Rich Skibo, Director of Business Development, SPYRUS, Inc. “The innovative security techniques implemented in Digital Attaché provide the customer with confidence that files or media can be shared securely with only the designated users. The individual mini/microSD media cards are encrypted at the media level, so very large files and databases can be encrypted without sacrificing performance. Media cards can be shared between designated users, and only authorized users are able to decrypt the files or applications stored on them. Files are not just encrypted using hardware-based AES-256 symmetric encryption, but each file is uniquely encrypted with its own key and sealed to provide auditable confirmation that the file has not been altered.”

The following usage examples illustrate the capabilities of Digital Attaché:

  • Users can encrypt files and share the files with one or more designated users and store the files on an Internet-accessible server. Only the originator and those designated can decrypt the files. Large files can be distributed this way without the bandwidth and storage overhead of e-mailing them, and without any spam.

  • A Digital Attaché user encrypts a 7 GB file containing sensitive data and places the file on the encrypted compartment of the microSD memory card. The user shares the memory card with a group of designated Digital Attaché users who work in a branch office 3,000 miles away. The originating user sends the memory card through inter-office mail to the group in the branch office without worrying that the data could be intercepted by an unauthorized user. Only the designated Digital Attaché users can decrypt files on the shared memory card.
SPYRUS believes in empowering users to protect sensitive data at the source, at the very edge of the network; thus, the SPYRUS slogan: Security to the Edge™. Digital Attaché provides empowerment through easily accessible methods of encryption. High-assurance cryptography and innovative security techniques make Digital Attaché ideal for organizations with sensitive data, particularly those that are subject to laws and regulations requiring the protection of personally identifiable information, such as the financial, payment card, healthcare, insurance, legal, and government industries.
